Coinbase Admits To Testing Clearview’s Controversial Facial Recognition Software
One of the major US-based crypto exchange firms, Coinbase, is one of over 2000 firms from across the world that is closely working with Clearview which provides facial recognition solutions which has been dubbed controversial, CoinDesk reports.

According to BuzzFeed, an internal document in its hands, shows that Clearview AI-based in New York, which is facing legal threats from different firms like Google and Apple, had so far partnered with over 2,000 firms and authorities around the world either through selling its controversial technology or mutual sharing.

The controversial facial recognition software has led to intense scrutiny of the company’s operations after the New York Times published a story indicating that the startup’s database had more than three billion images which had been scraped from various websites as well as social media networks with no consent from the users or the publishers.

Initially, Hoan Ton-That, Clearview’s CEO, had indicated that the technology had only been used by the law enforcement agencies and the firm’s business was only with US and Canada based organizations. However, an anonymous source has exposed the whole list of the firm’s clients who are from 26 nations.

The list includes renowned global firms like Walmart, Best Buy, Macy’s as well as banks, universities, government agencies, high schools and various police departments.

However, it is the inclusion of Coinbase that is surprising to the majority of crypto enthusiasts since the industry is driven by the need to have privacy. Coinbase’s spokesperson explained to BuzzFeed that the exchange was testing the usefulness of the technology on security as well as compliance. She explained, that Coinbase tested Clearview AI,

“TO SEE IF THE SERVICE COULD MEANINGFULLY BOLSTER OUR EFFORTS TO PROTECT EMPLOYEES AND OFFICES AGAINST PHYSICAL THREATS AND INVESTIGATE FRAUD.”

The spokesperson went on to say that the exchange is yet to make any commitments on the use of the technology.

Coinbase is not new to user privacy issues and was previously forced to clarify that it had not sold clients’ data after a top executive intimated that a former analytic had sold clients’ data to third parties.
